What are the best places to stay in west Puerto Rico?

We are often asked, “We love the idea of experiencing the real Puerto Rico, but where should we stay?” Or “The west is gorgeous, do you have any ideas of what to do?” Or “Are there any hotels in west Puerto Rico near our wedding location?”

Like most islanders, we know that the true magic of Puerto Rico is unlocked when one leaves the traffic and congestion of the San Juan metro area, and into the miles of untouched coastline, gorgeous mountain waterfalls, and the local cultures of Puerto Rico’s 77 other municipalities.

Yes, we know that the official government sites and so much online attention revolves around the San Juan metro area. But ask any local and watch their eyes light up when someone mentions the West. Home to the best beaches and friendliest locals, “The West is the Best” as the island saying goes.

Here’s our guide for the best places to stay in west Puerto Rico:

Our #1 recommendation is our own Airbnb. Just across the street from our gorgeous cliffside event space, Hacienda222, our lovingly restored family casita is the perfect place to stay for your wedding. From your front porch, enjoy the view of a stunning deserted beach (10 min hike down a private path) or one of Puerto Rico’s finest, the Isabela town square (one mile away). Cook in a newly renovated chef’s kitchen or grill out. Play outdoor games on the grassy lawn. Watch the moon rise and the sunset and enjoy the quiet, secure, residential authentic Puerto Rican neighborhood, surrounded by nature’s beauty. Click here for booking information, and click here for a video tour of our wedding casita.

There are also literally thousands of vacation rentals (Airbnb, VRBO, etc.) in the area. Especially compared to high-rise hotel prices in the metro area, you’ll find great value. Search in the municipalities of Quebradillas, Aguadilla, or Isabela for great options near the beach.

Search on the same apps in the nearby inland municipalities of San Sebastian and Moca for remote and panoramic mountain views and an entirely different tropical island experience. There are also possibilities for ‘glamping’ if that’s of interest!

Villa Tropical is a group of oceanfront apartments on one of the island’s best beaches. With more than thirty oceanfront and nearby listings, it’s a versatile option that can accommodate groups of all sizes and budgets. Two restaurants are within walking distance.

For hotel options, the luxury “casitas” at the Royal Isabela, a cliffside resort that sits on more than 8,000 private acres, are beyond stunning, and it boasts a truly world-class golf course.

There are a few units with a partial ocean view at Villa Montana Beach Resort, and the restaurant is great (it’s also open to the public and a short walk from the units at Villa Tropical).

And there’s always the Courtyard by Marriott, which includes a casino, splash pad pool, and restaurants.

Of course, while you are on the west side, you can check out our favorite things to do, local nightlife, and the best beaches. Or, ask us, as we love to share our own tips for how to enjoy west Puerto Rico!
